Practical guide to selling your underwater photos- platforms (Adobe Stock, Alamy, 500px), realistic pricing, and pitfalls to avoid. Includes Belgian tax information.
Yes, but the income depends on the chosen model. On stock photo platforms (like Adobe Stock and Alamy), earnings are modest: between €0.25 and €2 per download. Direct sales (custom licenses and fine art prints) are much more profitable but require more marketing effort.
Adobe Stock is the recommended starting point for beginners- it has a simple interface, Lightroom integration, and a large volume of buyers. Alamy offers better commissions (up to 50%) for more established photographers. 500px focuses on artistic quality and direct licensing.
Yes, it is mandatory. Any photograph that clearly shows the face of a diver requires a signed model release to be sold for commercial purposes. Without this document, the photograph can only be used editorially.
The price depends on the intended use. For private web use: €50-€150. For magazine publication: €200-€500. For a national advertising campaign: €500-€2000 or more. Exclusive usage is priced 2 to 5 times higher than non-exclusive usage.
It is not necessarily the case. In Belgium, if your additional income from royalties is below €7,320 per year (as of 2026), it is taxed at a reduced rate of 15%. Above that amount, you must declare it as supplementary income. It is highly recommended to consult with an accountant specializing in this area.
If the images are sharp, well-exposed, and show something interesting – such as animal behavior, a recognizable species, or skillful use of light – then they are suitable for image banks. These platforms seek authentic content, not necessarily material that looks like it was shot in a studio.
Yes. Adobe Stock and 500px accept photos taken with recent smartphones (such as the iPhone 15 Pro or Samsung S25 Ultra), provided they meet a minimum resolution of 4 MP and are properly exposed and in focus. Resolution is rarely an issue in 2026.
No, in most cases. It is possible to upload the same photos to multiple stock photo agencies simultaneously, except for certain bonus programs offered by Adobe Stock and Shutterstock that require exclusivity. Please read the terms and conditions of each contract carefully.
Selling your underwater photographs is accessible to any serious amateur photographer. The three main models are stock photo agencies, direct licensing to a client or media outlet, and fine art prints. Revenue varies from €0.25 per download on micro-stock sites to several hundred euros for a commercial license or a large format print.
In September 2023, during a training session at the Forest pool in Brussels, one of my students showed me a photo he had taken of an octopus in Paros. The photo was excellent. I asked him what he did with it. His answer: "I post it on Instagram." I suggested that he also put it up for sale on Adobe Stock. Six months later, it had earned him €38. Not enough to retire on, but enough to pay for his next diving equipment set.
Selling your underwater photos doesn't require you to be a professional. It requires being rigorous in the selection process, meticulous about metadata, and realistic about expected revenue.
This is the most accessible model. You upload your photos to platforms like Adobe Stock, Shutterstock, or Alamy. Buyers (communication agencies, media outlets, companies) license them individually. You receive a commission per download. The volume of sales is high, but the profit per unit is low: between €0.25 and €2 per download on major micro-stock platforms.
It's a game of volume. To generate €100 per month, you need a catalog of several hundred well-indexed photos and a history of regular sales.
You sell directly to a client (magazine, brand, NGO) the right to use your photo for a specific purpose, for a defined period, in a specific territory.
Prices range from €50 for limited web usage to several thousand euros for an international advertising campaign. This is the most profitable model, but it requires active sales efforts: finding clients, negotiating, and drafting usage contracts.
You sell your images as works of art, printed on high-quality materials (aluminum, dibond, baryta paper). The profit margins are excellent. A 60x90 cm print can be sold for between €300 and €800.
The clientele is specific (collectors, interior designers, companies), and the sales approach is more demanding than in stock photography agencies. However, for a photographer with a recognizable style, this model offers the best way to value their work.
Most photographers start with micro-stock to test the market, then diversify to direct licensing as their portfolio gains recognition.## Adobe Stock, Alamy, 500px: Creating an Account and Uploading Your First Photos
Adobe Stock is the recommended platform for photographers who already use Lightroom or Photoshop. The direct link with Lightroom allows you to send a photo for sale in just a few clicks from the library module.
To upload: create an account on contributor.stock.adobe.com, submit identification documents, and start uploading. Each photo is manually reviewed before being put on sale (processing time of 1 to 5 days).
Adobe Stock pays approximately 33% of the selling price, which represents €0.25 to €0.50 per download with a subscription, and more for individual licenses.
Alamy is a British stock photo agency that offers one of the best commission rates on the market: up to 50% on direct sales. It is particularly suitable for nature and documentary photographers.
Its search engine values well-documented metadata. Photographers who are meticulous about captions and keywords will benefit from this.
The validation process is more demanding than Adobe Stock. Photos are evaluated based on their technical quality (noise, sharpness, exposure). Allow for a longer validation time.
500px positions its photos at a higher level of artistic quality. The community is active there, and on-demand licenses allow for direct sales at more attractive prices. This option is particularly well-suited for underwater photographers who want to showcase artistic or behavioral images rather than generic ones.
Registration is free. Commissions vary depending on the license type: from 30% with Unlock Licensing to 60% with Marketplace Direct.
Image stock platforms have specific requirements. Understanding these needs before selecting your photos will save you time.
Animal behaviors sell well. An octopus hunting, two manta rays in formation, an octopus changing color: these images tell a story and are difficult for general buyers to replicate.
Human-animal interactions remain popular in editorial searches. A diver interacting respectfully with a sea lion, a dolphin, or a turtle. These photos require a model release if the diver is identifiable.
Identifiable species photographed clearly (with the species name in the metadata) are highly valued in both editorial and scientific databases.
Marine landscapes with strong natural light (sunbeams on the surface, depth with exceptional visibility) find buyers in the tourism and environmental sectors. What doesn't sell as well: generic coral photos without a clear subject, technically flawed images, and photos lacking precise metadata about the location and species.
Consult our guide on exporting underwater photos to prepare files that meet the technical requirements of various platforms.
Here is a price list based on current practices in the underwater photography market in 2026.

In Belgium, income derived from selling photographs is generally subject to copyright law. This regime offers advantages.
Up to €7,320 of royalty income per year (amount indexed for 2026), the tax rate is 15% after deducting 50% for standard expenses. In concrete terms, for every €1,000 earned, you pay approximately €75 in taxes.
Beyond this threshold, income is taxed as supplementary income according to the applicable marginal rate.
Here are some important points to remember:
Declare your income from the very first euro. The tax authorities receive declarations from the platforms. For example, Adobe Stock sends tax forms to contributors once a certain income level is reached.
Keep your receipts for equipment (camera, housing, lenses, software subscriptions). These can be deducted as professional expenses if you declare yourself as a supplementary self-employed individual.Consult an accountant specializing in copyright and independent creative activities. Belgian tax regulations regarding copyrights have changed in 2024 and warrant personalized guidance.
Pitfall 1: Uploading without metadata. A photo without a title, precise captions, and relevant keywords will never be found in a database. Take the time to properly fill out the information for each image before uploading it.
Pitfall 2: Neglecting model releases. Any photo showing an identifiable face (diver, instructor, client) requires a signed model release to be used for commercial purposes. Without this document, the photo is limited to editorial use, which significantly reduces its commercial potential.
Pitfall 3: Selling only on one platform. It is possible to upload the same photos to multiple stock image agencies simultaneously, except in certain bonus programs that require exclusivity. Carefully read the terms and conditions of each contract before committing.
Pitfall 4: Waiting for the perfect portfolio. Start uploading with what you have. The natural selection process of the market will quickly show you which types of images are of interest to buyers.
Pitfall 5: Ignoring rejections. When a photo is rejected by Adobe Stock or Alamy, the reason for the rejection is valuable. It precisely indicates the expected level of technical quality. To build a consistent online presence around your photographic work, read our article on creating an underwater photography portfolio.
