GoPro Mission 1: Third-Party Housings, Where Are We in July 2026?
When Mission 1 was announced, a question immediately flared up in forums and dive photography groups: will I be able to slide it into a serious housing with a dedicated port?
The short answer: the official GoPro housing exists and holds its promises down to 60 meters. Third-party housings with interchangeable ports? Still pending.
Here is the state of affairs in July 2026.
The official GoPro housing: what it does, what it doesn't
GoPro released its Protective Housing (reference AGDIV-001) at €50, compatible with Mission 1 and Mission 1 Pro. It descends to 60 meters, has integrated mounting fingers for horizontal and vertical shooting, and has been available from regular retailers since June 2026.
It is a solid solution for reef action video. Filming whale sharks while freediving, drop-off passes, giant clams in wide angle - the housing does the job.
What it doesn't do: no interchangeable port. No macro focusing with a dedicated lens. No option to screw in a fisheye wide angle for architectural shots. Mission 1 enters the housing, the lens looks through a flat glass window, and that's it. Perfect for the general video diver, insufficient for the photographer working macro or wide-angle atmosphere with dome correction.
Third parties: Seafrogs, AOI, Ikelite - where are they?
Here we enter active waiting territory.
Since Mission 1's announcement in April 2026, third-party housing manufacturers have been observing the market. Specialized sources list Seafrogs, AOI, and Ikelite as the most likely to release a dedicated housing. But as of this article's date, none of the three has made an official announcement.
Why does it take time? Mission 1 is a different form factor than previous Heroes. The body is larger, button placement changed, and lens diameter and position differ. Housing manufacturers must rework molds, ports, and remote trigger systems. It is not a minor update.
On older models, Seafrogs often announced a housing within two to three months of camera launch. We could expect something between August and October 2026. AOI has its Quick Release system already compatible with action cam housings, which could speed up Mission 1 integration. Ikelite will likely communicate at DEMA Show in November in New Orleans.
What the absence of third-party housings means in practice
For wide-angle video, the lack of a dome port is not necessarily a dealbreaker. Mission 1 shoots Open Gate 8:7 with a naturally wide field of view, and the official housing doesn't degrade image quality for this type of use.
For underwater photography, it is different. Mission 1 is not primarily a photo camera - it is a video camera with good photo capabilities. If your main focus is nudibranch macro or close-up fish portraits, combining Mission 1 + official housing + no macro port is not the highest-performing setup on the market.
While waiting for third-party housings, two alternative setups work:
Wet lens option. Some wet lenses mount directly onto the official housing via a filter adapter. Quality doesn't equal a glass dome port, but it is operational and available now.
Patience option. The 60m housing is more than enough for 90% of reef dives. Nothing forces putting Mission 1 in a dedicated-port housing from the first dive.
What I recommend for your profile
You shoot video, dive reefs or walls, and want impressive wide angle. The official housing does exactly what you need. Buy it, use it now, re-evaluate when third parties arrive.
You do serious underwater photography, work macro or architectural framing. Mission 1 is not your primary photo camera yet. Watch third-party announcements in the autumn before deciding.
You want to experiment with Log files and advanced video modes on Mission 1 Pro. The official housing lets you dive now. Log and low-light modes are announced for Q3 2026. What arrives for the camera may be more interesting than what arrives for the housing.
The signal to watch
The next two months are key. If Seafrogs or AOI announce a housing with a compatible port before DEMA Show, it confirms Mission 1 is taken seriously by the underwater photo ecosystem. If November arrives with no announcement, it speaks volumes about Mission 1's true position in the photo segment.
