There are cameras you wait for. And there are those you watch week after week because they have already proven something underwater. The Insta360 X5 belongs to the second category. So when the first images of the X6 began circulating early July 2026, I had to look closer.
Here is what we know. And what it implies for those diving with a 360 camera.
On July 3, 2026, model CINSABXA received FCC approval in the United States. A few days later, a European retailer listed the device with photos. The timing surprised few people: Insta360 follows a fairly regular annual cycle, and the X5 came out in spring 2025.
What surprised people was the design.
The X6 no longer looks like the X5. The body is distinctly shorter, stockier, with a silhouette recalling GoPro more than previous Insta360 models. It is a visible design shift, not just a spec evolution.
On paper, leaks mention 8K at 50fps in 360 mode (versus 30fps on X5), pricing around €689-800 depending on markets, and an expected release between August and September 2026. Nothing official from Insta360. Information comes from retailer listings and FCC filings.
On land, the difference between 30 and 50fps is a matter of smoothness. Underwater, it is something else.
Diving is motion. Fish don't stay still. Currents shift shots. And when filming in 360, you capture everything at once: subject, reef, yourself with your gear. Minor sudden movements show. Ascents, bubbles, fin kicks - all end up in the frame somewhere.
At 30fps, reframing in post-production on fast sequences leaves visible artifacts. At 50fps, you have twice as much data to work with, and slow motion stays crisp. It is particularly useful for filming animals in motion (pelagic fish, rays, sharks) or action shots while freediving.
The X5 with AquaVision was already solid for classic reef diving. The X6 with 50fps opens the door to usages X5 handled less well.
This is the question that stopped me upon seeing the images.
A smaller body means a smaller possible housing - and potentially a better hydrodynamic profile underwater. That is good news in theory.
The bad news: housings dedicated to X5 (like the Invisible Dive Case Pro rated to 60m) will not be compatible with X6. We must wait for Insta360 or a third party to announce a new housing. On X5, the Invisible Dive Case was available quickly after launch. On X6, no confirmation yet.
If you dive regularly and invested in an X5 housing, no need to panic. The X5 remains an excellent camera and existing housings continue to work. But starting from scratch in autumn, X6 will likely be the right choice - with some patience for the housing.
The question everyone asks.
If you own an X5 and dive with it, there is no urgent reason to switch. AquaVision works well, image quality is there. An upgrade for 50fps is interesting but not critical for calm reef diving.
If you don't own a 360 camera yet and plan to buy one for diving, waiting until September is reasonable. The X6 will likely be available and first field reviews will circulate.
If you have a filming project this summer (August dives, liveaboard trip), X5 is available now with a proven housing. That is worth something.
Leaks indicate direction. They don't answer what truly matters underwater.
The real questions: does AquaVision evolve on X6 to better handle bright sandy bottoms? Does stabilization gain efficiency? Does the new body alter center of gravity and behavior without floats?
These answers only come from diving with it.
As soon as X6 is officially announced and I access a unit, I will test it underwater. Meanwhile, leaked specs are promising - especially 50fps. But a dive camera is judged at 15 meters, not on a spec sheet.
Insta360 X6 points toward a release between August and September 2026. The most concrete change for diving: 8K at 50fps, which genuinely improves moving subject footage and slow motion quality. The new compact body is a good direction if housing manufacturers follow quickly.
For now, watch and wait. Don't order yet.
