What is the exact internal volume of the Mares X-Free mask and why is it suitable for freediving?
The internal volume is documented as being less than 80 cm3. This reduction in air space limits the amount of air needed to equalize pressure during deep dives.
Does the Mares X-Free mask have an option for corrective lenses?
Official sources and retailers do not document the availability of original corrective lenses for this model, which is designed specifically for freediving. This represents a limitation for divers who have vision problems.
How can you explain the matte finish on this model?
The matte, anti-reflective finish is designed to prevent glare underwater. This is a desirable feature for underwater hunting because it helps avoid scaring away marine life.
What is the function of the raised area located on the nosepiece of the mask?
This textured surface provides a better grip when using a nose clip or performing nasal equalization maneuvers while wearing thick gloves.

Introduction
The world of freediving imposes strict physiological constraints, where every cubic centimeter of air and every gram of equipment matters during free immersion dives. The choice of mask is a fundamental technical decision aimed at reducing dead space and facilitating equalization. The documentary analysis presented in this study aims to decipher the factual characteristics of the Mares X-Free mask, a piece of equipment specifically developed to meet the needs of freedivers. Based exclusively on data provided by the manufacturer and its official retailers as of August 18, 2026, we provide a systematic overview of its performance and operational limitations. This evaluation approach is purely documentary, without resorting to subjective field tests, in order to provide practitioners with reliable factual information to guide their decision-making before any purchase.
SummaryThe Mares X-Free mask receives an overall weighted score of 4.15 out of 5, as determined by our evaluation system. This composite score reflects a balance between design choices focused on hydrodynamic integration and the compromises inherent in its specialization. The table below details the scores assigned across the seven fundamental areas of our reference framework, as of August 18, 2026 [1] [2].

This mask is designed for freedivers and spearfishers who are looking for a minimal internal volume, a streamlined profile, and a matte, anti-reflective finish suitable for demanding environments.
This mask is not ideal for scuba divers seeking a large panoramic view, corrective lens options, or for faces whose morphology does not match the specific anatomical skirt of this model.
Detailed Analysis
M1 - Volume and Field of Vision (Score: 4.5/5)
The first section examines the compactness of the internal volume and the width of the field of vision. The Mares X-Free stands out for its reduced internal air space, documented as being below 80 cm3 [1]. This characteristic is essential for deep freediving because it limits the amount of air needed to equalize the mask's pressure during descent. Criteria: Internal volume less than 80 cm3 and close positioning of the lenses (Score: 4.5/5).
M2 - Skirt and Fit (Score: 4.0/5)
The second section analyzes the quality of the material and the design of the facial skirt. The model incorporates an anatomical silicone skirt to conform to the contours of the face [2]. The design aims to ensure a good fit on slim to medium-sized faces. Criteria: Anatomical silicone skirt and geometry designed for freediving (Score: 4.0/5). [1]
M3 - Lenses and Communication (Score: 4.0/5)The third section evaluates the type of lenses and the possibilities for visual communication. The safety-tempered glass offers excellent optical clarity and sits close to the eyes. The design incorporates a matte finish on its external structure to eliminate unwanted reflections underwater. Criteria: clear tempered glass, no optical correction, and anti-reflective matte treatment (Score: 4.0/5). [1]
M4 - Anti-fog and Maintenance (Score: 3.5/5)
The fourth section focuses on maintenance and fog management. The documentation does not mention any permanent anti-fog treatment applied at the factory [1][2]. The user must apply standard degreasing procedures before first use. Criteria: requires standard maintenance and no documented original anti-fog treatment (Score: 3.5/5).
M5 - Strap and Ergonomics (Score: 4.5/5)
The fifth section analyzes the adjustment and ergonomics. The mask is equipped with ergonomic buckles anchored directly to the silicone skirt, improving hydrodynamics [1]. The design incorporates a textured area on the nose bridge, facilitating the use of a nasal clip or equalization. Criteria: buckles anchored to the skirt and textured nasal area (Score: 4.5/5).
M6 - Durability and Accessories (Score: 4.0/5)The sixth section evaluates the sturdiness and quality of the materials. The Mares X-Free features a rigid frame overmolded directly onto the silicone skirt, eliminating complex mechanical assemblies [2]. Weighing only 147 grams, this model reduces muscle fatigue. Criteria: Rigid overmolded frame and lightweight design (147 grams) (Score: 4.0/5). [1]
M7 - Price and Availability (Score: 4.5/5)
The seventh section examines the commercial positioning. Observed between €41 and €59 on the market as of August 18, 2026, the Mares X-Free offers a competitive price-to-performance ratio for specialized freediving [1] [2]. Criteria: Accessible pricing between €41 and €59 (Score: 4.5/5).
What to know before buying
Acquiring a specialized freediving mask like the Mares X-Free requires attention to several parameters. Reducing the internal volume below 80 cm³ facilitates equalization at depth, but implies close proximity of the lenses to the eyes. The absence of documented corrective lenses in the standard range means that users who require vision correction should consider alternative solutions. Finally, the geometry of the anatomical skirt does not eliminate the need for a physical fitting to validate facial sealing.
Trying on the mask before purchase: the criterion that surpasses all scores. This comparison helps you to compare the different models. However, it cannot tell you if a mask is suitable for your face. Before purchasing, place the mask on your face without the strap, inhale gently through your nose, and check that it stays in place without any pressure points or leaks. This step represents more than 80% of the actual importance of your purchase. If the skirt doesn't fit your facial structure, no ultra-clear lens, anti-fog treatment, or buckle system will compensate for the problem.
Safety Reminder
Freediving is practiced in an environment where safety relies on visual communication and mutual monitoring within a buddy pair. A low-volume mask offers improved performance, but the choice of tint or finish should respect visibility conditions. Matte versions should be chosen with awareness of their impact on brightness. Clear lenses with standard treatment should not be confused with mirrored lenses. Maintaining clear communication with your buddy remains an absolute safety rule.
Our Verdict
The documentation analysis of the Mares X-Free highlights a well-designed piece of equipment, calibrated for freediving and spearfishing thanks to its reduced volume, weight of 147 grams, and hydrodynamics. Its affordable price further enhances its appeal. The lack of optical correction and the need to validate the seal through a physical fitting remain the main limitations to consider.## Maintenance and Lifespan
Maintaining the technical qualities of the equipment requires careful maintenance after each dive session. It is recommended to rinse thoroughly with fresh water to remove salt, sand, and chlorine. Storage should be done away from direct sunlight and heat to prevent premature aging of the silicone. Complete drying before storage ensures a longer lifespan.
