Test of the DIRZONE Ring 14 + Comfort Harness: What you really need to consider before buying it.
A buoyancy compensator (BCD) doesn't become good simply by adding up technical features. It becomes useful when it stops occupying the diver's mind. The DIRZONE Ring 14 + Comfort Harness falls into the category of backplate + wing donut single tank systems and makes a specific promise: to serve an advanced recreational diving practice, using a single 10-12 L tank, in a DIR configuration, in temperate water. This document is not a substitute for a trial, but it allows you to know exactly what the model offers and what problems it doesn't solve. [1]The question is less about whether this BCD performs well in absolute terms and more about verifying whether it's compatible with your regulator, thermal protection, weighting system, accessories, and skill level. As a backplate and wing system, this model separates the structure, harness, and wing. This modularity can accommodate progression, provided you check the assembly, weighting, and wing size before changing configurations. [2] [3]
The Verdict in Summary
The DIRZONE Ring 14 + Comfort Harness receives an overall AquaExposure score of 3.9/5. This rating should be considered within its category and not used as a universal truth. Its key features include Cordura 2000 outer material, 5 stainless steel D-rings, two regulator attachment straps, and a stainless steel or aluminum backplate. Its main limitations are the lack of standard quick-release weights, no storage pockets, and a limited buoyancy of 14L, which may be insufficient for divers with heavy equipment. [1]

Detailed Analysis
G1 Buoyancy
The declared buoyancy is 14 kg, which is 31 lb. This volume should not be considered in isolation. It must account for the negative buoyancy of the complete configuration, including the tank, gas, wetsuit, weights, and accessories. An insufficient value can reduce comfort at the surface. An excessive value does not automatically make a dive safer. [4]
The Ring 14 is DIRZONE's solid single-tank buoyancy compensator: a 14 L donut wing with a very durable Cordura 2000 outer shell, and an HF-welded Cordura 560 bladder with PU seals. The set includes two weight pockets and a continuous webbing harness with stainless steel D-rings. This is a well-structured European reference for single tanks of 10 to 12 L. Based on this assessment, the DIRZONE Ring 14 + Comfort Harness receives a G1 score of 4.2/5. Trim and purge control must be performed under the intended conditions, not just in dry conditions. [1]
G2 Weighting
This model does not include integrated quick-release weights in the described configuration, with an indicated capacity of 0 kg. It includes 2 trim pockets. This distribution can help adjust balance, but it does not replace a thorough weight check. Weights should always remain manageable, understood, and appropriate for the environment. [3]The G2 score of 2.5/5 reflects the capacity and logical arrangement of this model. Before purchasing, verify the actual functionality of the pockets with your own weights and your usual wetsuit.
G3 Storage
The DIRZONE Ring 14 + Comfort Harness provides 0 storage pockets and 5 metal D-rings. The product description details these attachments as 5 stainless steel D-rings on a continuous webbing harness: 2 shoulder, 2 waist, and 1 below the buoyancy compensator. This information is important when carrying equipment such as a pony bottle, a reel, a light, or a housing. [1]
The G3 score of 3.0/5 does not evaluate the absolute volume of a pocket. It expresses the suitability between the available attachment points and accessories typically associated with advanced recreational diving, single tanks (10-12 L), DIR configurations, and temperate water conditions.
G4 Harness
The harness is described as a continuous webbing Comfort Harness with either a 3 mm stainless steel or aluminum backplate. The product description mentions 3 adjustment axes. This is a useful indicator, but comfort also depends on your size, shoulder width, torso length, wetsuit, and the position of the tank on your back. [2]
The G4 score of 4.7/5 reflects the potential for adjustment in this design. A test dive should verify that the straps do not pull, that the waistband does not ride up, and that the controls remain accessible when the buoyancy compensator is inflated.
G5 MaterialsThe stated weight is 3 kg, and the construction is advertised as external Cordura 2000 with internal Cordura 560, featuring PU seals. The D-rings are made of metal. These details indicate expected durability, resistance to wear and tear, and ease of transport, but they alone cannot determine the longevity of a specific unit. [1]
The G5 score of 5.0/5 reflects this assessment of construction quality. The actual condition of a used BCD, including its servicing history, inflators, and purge valves, must be checked independently of the year it was manufactured or the brand's reputation.
G6 Versatility
The configuration is advertised for advanced recreational diving, single tank 10-12 L, DIR (Drysuit Integrated Rig), and use in temperate waters, with potential applications in warmer conditions. The specifications indicate no declared compatibility with twin setups and no declared sidemount compatibility. Therefore, its actual capabilities are not suitable for twin setups or sidemount configurations in this configuration. [1]
The G6 score of 4.0/5 expresses its ability to adapt to different diving styles without implying that a single model is suitable for everyone. A transition to more technical diving may require a different system rather than simply adding accessories.
What you need to know before buyingThe first check concerns buoyancy. With a declared buoyancy of 14 kg, the DIRZONE Ring 14 + Comfort Harness needs to be adjusted to your actual configuration. A thicker wetsuit, a steel tank, saltwater, a housing, or a light can significantly change the required buoyancy. The correct decision comes from checking your weighting at the end of the dive, not from following a general rule. [4]
The second check concerns comfort. This model features continuous Comfort Harness webbing plus a 3 mm stainless steel or aluminum backplate. Wear it with your usual thermal protection and then, while submerged, check your breathing, access to purge valves, the direct-system functionality, and the position of the tank. A poorly fitted vest adds mental strain that the diver should be dedicating to observing the environment and their dive buddy. [2]
The third check is about usability. As a backplate and wing system, this model separates the structure, the harness, and the wing. This modularity can facilitate progression, provided you verify the assembly, weighting, and wing size before changing configurations. The identified qualities – external Cordura 2000 material, 5 stainless steel D-rings, two locking straps, a stainless steel or aluminum backplate – should be weighed against its limitations: no standard quick-release weight pockets, no storage pockets, and a limited buoyancy of 14 L which may not be sufficient for heavy setups. The average indicative price of €774 in 2026 is a point of comparison, but never a safety criterion.<!-- DIRECTION VISUELLE SECONDAIRE : detail of the Comfort Harness webbing, continuous design + stainless steel or aluminum plate (3 mm) and metal D-rings from the DIRZONE Ring 14 + Comfort Harness. Safety Reminder
The advertised buoyancy, price, and rating do not replace a test dive, a weight check, or appropriate training. Any modification to the tank, wetsuit, weights, or accessories requires re-verifying the entire configuration. For single-tank backplate + wing systems, it is essential to understand the equipment before entrusting it with responsibilities that it cannot handle alone. [2] [3] [4]
Our Verdict
The DIRZONE Ring 14 + Comfort Harness is suitable for advanced recreational diving, using a single 10-12 liter tank, in DIR configurations, and in temperate waters, provided the user's physique, weighting, and environment match the specifications. Its advantages include external Cordura 2000 material, 5 stainless steel D-rings, two locking straps, and a stainless steel or aluminum plate. Its limitations are: no standard quick-release weight pockets, no storage pockets, and a limited buoyancy of 14 liters, which may be insufficient for heavy diving equipment. Therefore, the best purchase is not based on the highest rating, but on choosing a configuration that is understandable, comfortable, and appropriately sized for the type of diving you will actually be doing.
