XDeep NX Zen Review: What You Really Need to Consider Before Buying
A buoyancy compensator (BCD) isn't good simply because it lists impressive technical features. It becomes useful when it stops occupying the diver's mind. The XDeep NX Zen falls into the backplate + wing (donut) category and makes a specific promise: to serve a diving practice focused on technical diving, advanced techniques, photography, and wrecks. This review doesn't replace a hands-on trial, but it helps you understand exactly what this model offers and what problems it doesn't solve. [1]
The question isn't whether this BCD is inherently high-performing, but rather whether it suits your tank, thermal protection, weighting system, accessories, and skill level. As a backplate + wing system, this model separates the structure, harness, and bladder. This modularity can support progression, provided you verify the assembly, weighting, and wing size before changing configurations. [2] [3]
The Verdict in SummaryThe XDeep NX Zen receives an overall AquaExposure score of 4.2/5. This rating should be considered within its category and not used as a universal standard. Its strengths include: very low profile design to reduce drag, uniform "donut" wing shape, 6 metal D-rings, and compatibility with twin cylinders. Its main limitations are: no integrated weights, no storage pockets, and a harness learning curve. [1]

Detailed Analysis
G1 Buoyancy
The stated buoyancy is 19 kg, which is equivalent to 42 lb. This value should not be considered in isolation. It represents the overall negative buoyancy of the complete configuration, including the cylinder(s), gas, wetsuit, weights, and accessories. An insufficient value may reduce comfort at the surface. An excessive value does not automatically make a dive safer. [4]The NX Zen is a benchmark for single-tank technical wings. It features a very low profile, minimal drag, and exceptional trim. The donut wing ensures even buoyancy distribution. It has 6 metal D-rings. There is no integrated weight: a weight belt or trim pockets on the straps are required. This assessment gives the XDeep NX Zen a G1 score of 5.0/5. Trim and purge control must be performed under the intended conditions, not just in shallow water. [1]
G2 Weighting
This model does not offer integrated quick-release weights in the described configuration, with a stated capacity of 0 kg. It includes 2 trim pockets. This distribution can help adjust buoyancy, but it does not replace proper weight adjustment. Weights should always remain easily accessible and appropriate for the environment. [3]
The G2 score of 2.5/5 reflects the carrying capacity and logic of this model. Before purchasing, verify the actual functionality of the trim pockets with your own weights and your usual wetsuit.
G3 Storage
The XDeep NX Zen provides 0 storage pockets and 6 metal D-rings. The specifications describe these attachments as 6 stainless steel D-rings, well distributed on the shoulders and hips. This information is important when carrying a rebreather bailout bottle, a reel, a light or a housing. [1]
The G3 score of 3.5/5 does not evaluate the absolute volume of a pocket. It expresses the suitability between the available attachment points and accessories typically associated with technical, advanced, photography, and wreck diving applications.
G4 HarnessThe harness is described as a continuous webbing DIR-style or Deluxe harness. The specifications mention 3 adjustment points. This is a useful indicator, but comfort also depends on your size, shoulder width, torso length, wetsuit, and how the tank sits on your back. [2]
A G4 score of 5.0/5 indicates the potential for adjustability in this design. A test dive should confirm that the straps don't pull, the waistband doesn't ride up, and the controls remain accessible when the BCD is inflated.
G5 Materials
The stated weight is 3.2 kg, and the construction is advertised as high-strength ballistic nylon. The D-rings are made of metal. These details indicate expected durability, resistance to wear and tear, and ease of transport, but they alone cannot determine the longevity of a specific unit. [1]
A G5 score of 4.5/5 reflects this assessment of the materials used. The actual condition of a used BCD, including any repairs, inflators, and purge valves, should be checked independently of the year it was manufactured or the brand's reputation.
G6 Versatility
The configuration is advertised for technical diving, advanced diving, underwater photography, wreck diving, and use in warm, temperate, and cold water conditions. The specifications indicate compatibility with a twin-tank setup but no declared sidemount compatibility. Therefore, its actual range of use is limited to twin-tank configurations. [1]The G6 score of 4.5/5 indicates its ability to adapt to changes in diving practices, but it does not suggest that one model is suitable for everyone. Any progression towards technical diving remains linked to training, equipment configuration, and proper setup.
What you need to know before buying:
The first check concerns buoyancy. With a declared buoyancy of 19 kg, the XDeep NX Zen needs to be tested with your actual gear configuration. A thicker wetsuit, a steel tank, saltwater, a housing, or a strobe can significantly alter the required buoyancy. The right decision starts with checking your weighting at the end of a dive, not by following a general rule. [4]
The second check concerns comfort. This model features continuous webbing harnesses in a DIR-style or Deluxe configuration. Wear it with your usual thermal protection and then, while submerged, check your breathing, access to purge valves, the direct system, and the position of the tank. A poorly fitted vest adds mental strain that the diver should be dedicating to their surroundings and dive buddy. [2]The third aspect to consider is usability. Like backplate and wing systems, this model separates the structure, harness, and wing. This modularity can be beneficial for progression, but it's essential to verify the assembly, weighting, and wing size before changing configurations. The identified advantages – a very low profile design that reduces drag, uniform weight distribution with the "donut" wing shape, 6 metal D-rings, and compatibility with twin tanks – should be weighed against the limitations: no integrated weights, no storage pockets, and a learning curve associated with using a harness. The average indicative price of €699 in 2026 is a point of comparison, but never a safety criterion.
Safety Reminder
The advertised buoyancy, price, and rating do not replace a trial dive, a weight check, or appropriate training. Any modification to the tank(s), wetsuit, weights, or accessories requires re-verifying the entire configuration. For backplate + wing (donut) systems, the correct approach is to understand the equipment before entrusting it with responsibilities that it cannot handle alone. [2] [3] [4]
Our VerdictThe XDeep NX Zen is suitable for technical, advanced, photography, and wreck diving when the diver's physique, weighting, and environment match the specifications. Its advantages include a very low profile to minimize drag, a donut-shaped wing for even weight distribution, six metal D-rings, and compatibility with twin cylinders. Its limitations are that it does not have integrated weights or storage pockets, and there is a learning curve associated with using the harness. Therefore, the best purchase isn't necessarily based on the highest score, but rather choosing a configuration that is understandable, comfortable, and appropriately sized for the type of diving you will actually be doing.
