Mares Quad Ci Review- The large color display takes it to the next level.
Complete review of the Mares Quad Ci dive computer. Features an MIP 8-color display, Bühlmann ZH-L16C algorithm, air integration capabilities, and a review by Benjamin for AquaExposure.
What is the difference between the Mares Quad and the Quad Ci?
The Quad Ci features a high-resolution color display (MIP with 8 colors) and a Bühlmann ZH-L16C algorithm with customizable gradient factors, compared to the standard segmented LCD screen found on the original model.
Can the Mares Quad Ci handle multiple gas mixtures?
Yes, it can manage up to 5 gases simultaneously, including Nitrox (21-99%) and Trimix (both normoxic and hypoxic).
Can I change the battery myself?
No, the Quad Ci no longer uses a replaceable battery. Instead, it features a rechargeable LiPo battery that can be charged via a cable and USB clip, offering up to 30 hours of battery life during dives.
Does the Mares Quad Ci include a compass?
Yes, it includes a full-view digital compass (3D) with heading memory and a timer for navigation.
In the world of scuba diving, observing a dive group on a deep wall reveals a lot about the ergonomics of the equipment. Divers often squint at small monochrome screens when the light fades or the water becomes filled with particles.
However, a dive computer is more than just a backlit timer. It's the fundamental tool that manages decompression safety for every dive.
Following the success of its classic Quad range, the Italian manufacturer has updated its flagship model with the Mares Quad Ci. Featuring a MIP color display and a completely open desaturation algorithm, this model promises exceptional readability and a clear technical evolution towards Trimix diving.
This review aims to determine whether this color version justifies the investment and whether the four-button ergonomics remain as intuitive in real-world situations.

Price & customer service
4.3/5
Extensive Mares network- one of the best quality/price ratios for this screen size.
This computer is ideal for: Recreational or open-circuit technical divers who want a very large screen for maximum readability without compromising on their algorithm settings. This computer is not ideal for: Those who prefer a discreet watch format to wear daily, or those who dive exclusively with rebreathers (CCR).
3. Detailed Analysis
Algorithm & decompression stops (5.0/5)The dive computer entrusts the management of your saturation to one of the most transparent models on the market. It allows you to configure your safety margins exactly as you have been taught.
The Quad Ci uses the Bühlmann ZH-L16C algorithm with fully customizable Gradient Factors (GF). The decompression plan display is comprehensive, featuring a continuous ceiling and color-coded tissue saturation for instant readability.
Air & Multi-Gas (3.7/5)
Whether you are doing simple air dives or accelerated decompression using pure Nitrox, switching between gases is done in a very visual way underwater.
The system manages up to 5 gas mixes. It includes Nitrox from 21% to 99% oxygen and supports full Trimix (normoxic and hypoxic). However, it does not have native support certified for rebreathers (CCR), focusing on open-circuit systems.
Screen & Ergonomics (4.2/5)
This is a major strength of this model. Its generous size and the integration of color radically transform the experience compared to older LCD segment screens in the range.
The screen is MIP (Memory In Pixel) type with high resolution, displaying 8 colors. Navigation relies on 4 robust buttons located at the corners of the housing, greatly facilitating operation, even when wearing very thick waterproof gloves.
Battery Life & Power (3.6/5)Unlike previous generations, you will no longer need to have your battery replaced. The computer recharges via a cable, which is very convenient for everyday use, although you must remember to plug it in before each dive.
The power supply is provided by a LiPo battery offering 30 hours of autonomy in dive mode. Be aware that if you activate the connection with a wireless pressure transmitter, this autonomy drops to approximately 20 hours. Charging is done via a USB clip designed to withstand 500 charge cycles.
Connectivity & App (4.6/5)
The dive log is filled in a modern way. There is no longer a need for an expensive optional interface cable, the computer natively connects with your smartphone.
Bluetooth is integrated directly. The Mares app allows you to quickly download your dive logs, view the tissue saturation curve for each dive, and perform system software updates.
Compass & Instruments (4.2/5)
Underwater navigation is facilitated by a very smooth digital compass, displayed directly within your critical dive data.
The digital compass has a full display with heading memory and a timer. It also features a depth gauge mode with a resettable average depth function, which is classic and effective for technical diving.
Robustness & Depth (4.0/5)Designed for deep dives, the rectangular housing is made of reinforced plastics that are particularly resistant to crushing. The Quad Ci is certified for an operating depth of 150 meters, ensuring excellent structural integrity.
Price & Customer Service (4.3/5)
One of the manufacturer's key strengths is its logistical presence in Europe. With its open algorithm, color display, and readability, it offers one of the best value-for-money ratios on the market for this format. The Mares network guarantees extremely fast access to spare parts and customer service.
4. What you need to know before buying* Certification Level: Very readable and accessible from Level 1, but the device is actually calibrated for experienced divers or technical courses thanks to its Trimix options and open Gradient Factors.
Field Workflow: Excellent readability on the boat. As with any battery-powered device, remember to bring its specific USB charging clip on your trips, otherwise you may find yourself without power. Integrated Air Alert: The Quad Ci can pair with up to 5 wireless sensors. Note that activating this function reduces battery life from 30 hours to 20 hours. Air integration simplifies reading, but it never replaces the redundancy of a traditional mechanical pressure gauge. * Expandability: No hardware limitations if you switch to an open multi-block configuration. The lack of a native CCR mode is its only limitation for expandability if using a rebreather is your goal.
5. Safety Reminder
Safety always comes before the score. A dive computer is a decision-making aid, never a guarantee. Even with a customizable algorithm, a high score does not exempt you from appropriate training, a redundant backup system during dives, and adherence to learned procedures.
If you use air integration, it absolutely requires a backup pressure gauge or a redundant regulator due to the risk of signal loss and the increased battery consumption caused by the transmitter.Advanced functions require specific and thorough training before use. Never modify your Gradient Factors without a solid understanding of tissue desaturation theory.
6. Our Verdict
The Mares Quad Ci is the update that all fans of large screens have been waiting for. By switching to the Bühlmann algorithm and adopting a color MIP display, Mares transforms a pleasant recreational dive computer into a machine capable of supporting a diver towards the realm of advanced trimix diving, all at a very competitive price.
I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone seeking flawless readability, regardless of water clarity. Only divers looking for the elegance of a wristwatch will opt for a different format, but for calmly monitoring your decompression stops, this is a top-tier tool.
