Test Xiaomi 17: Underwater Photography Review and 2026 Score
Xiaomi 17 underwater camera test- natural light photography. AquaExposure score: 4.1/5. Features: Leica Summilux, RAW 14-bit. Housings and pricing information. Is it worth buying for underwater use?
Is the Xiaomi 17 a good phone for underwater photography?
Yes, the Xiaomi 17 is a good option for underwater photography in natural light. Its Light Fusion 950 sensor (1/1.31 inch, f/1.67) with the Leica Summilux lens performs well in low-light conditions down to 20-25 meters. The 14-bit DNG RAW format, the H.265 10-bit codec with Xiaomi Log, and compatibility with MotionCam Pro make it a versatile tool. AquaExposure rating: 4.1/5. Its drawbacks are the lack of a microSD card slot and an aluminum rather than titanium housing.
Does the Xiaomi 17 have the Leica partnership for underwater photography?
Yes. The standard Xiaomi 17 benefits from the same partnership with Leica as the 17 Ultra: Summilux optics, Leica color science with two profiles (Leica Authentic and Leica Vibrant), and RAW processing co-developed with Leica. The difference between the Ultra lies in the main sensor - 1/1.31 inch versus a full 1-inch format - and the absence of the 200 MP periscope telephoto lens. For natural light diving, the Leica color science is what most significantly changes the image rendering during post-processing.
What underwater housing is suitable for the Xiaomi 17 when diving?
The DIVEVOLK SeaTouch 4 Max Platinum is the confirmed reference model for the Xiaomi 17. Divevolk published a guide dedicated to the Xiaomi 17 and its SeaTouch housing in February 2026. This universal touchscreen housing is certified to 60 meters, provides access to all settings of the native application, and supports third-party apps like MotionCam Pro. Approximate price: around €440.
What is the difference between the Xiaomi 17 and the Xiaomi 17 Ultra for diving?
Both models share the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor and the Leica partnership. The main difference for underwater photography is that the 17 Ultra features a full-frame 1-inch sensor (Light Fusion 1050L) compared to a 1/1.31-inch sensor on the standard model, and it offers a 200 MP telephoto lens with an optical zoom range of 75-100 mm - which is crucial for photographing distant subjects. The standard 17 provides very good macro capabilities at a close distance of 10 cm. The price difference is significant: €999 versus €1499 at launch. For those on a tight budget, the standard 17 still offers excellent value for underwater photography.
Should an anti-fog treatment be used with this device?
Yes, absolutely. Due to its housing (often made of aluminum) and heat dissipation system using a vapor chamber, the risk of condensation forming in cold water (below 15°C) is significant. Using an anti-fog treatment (such as a silica gel packet or inserts) inside the housing is mandatory before each dive.
How can I quickly transfer my photos and videos from this device?
This device offers excellent connectivity. With a wired connection, the USB 3.2 port allows you to quickly transfer gigabytes of RAW files or 4K videos to an external SSD or computer in just seconds. For wireless transfers, using Mi Share / ShareMe is ideal for fast and stable connections.
Test Xiaomi 17: Underwater Photography Review and 2026 Score
When Xiaomi announced the Leica partnership for the entire 17 series - including the base model - the question deserved serious consideration. Not the 17 Ultra with its 1-inch sensor and periscope telephoto lens at 200 MP. The standard Xiaomi 17. The one that costs €999. The one that most people will actually buy.
The Leica partnership covers the Summilux optics, color science in two profiles (Authentic and Vibrant), and RAW processing co-developed between Leica and Xiaomi. This is not just marketing. It's a measurable difference in post-processing, especially for white balance correction underwater, where the neutrality of Leica's color science provides a more reliable starting point than the "punchy" profiles of some competitors.
For an underwater photographer working with natural light, what matters most isn't the raw power of the Ultra. It's the quality of the captured signal, the accuracy of the RAW files, and the smoothness of the workflow between 5 and 25 meters depth. This test evaluates exactly that.

This device is ideal for: Android underwater photographers who want Leica color science in a compact format for under €1000, with native RAW support and access to MotionCam Pro.
This device is not ideal for: dives deeper than 30 meters when shooting extreme macro (the 10 cm macro lens shows its limitations compared to the 5 cm of the 15 Ultra), and users who need a microSD card slot to manage large amounts of RAW files while traveling.
B1 - The optics and sensor: what the Light Fusion 950 really seesThe main sensor in the Xiaomi 17 is the Light Fusion 950- a high-sensitivity 50 MP chip housed in a 1/1.31-inch format, behind a Summilux lens with an f/1.67 aperture. It's not the 1-inch sensor of the Ultra, but it's also not the small sensor found in mid-range devices.
For comparison- a 1/1.31-inch format captures approximately 40% less light than a full 1-inch format. In practice- underwater- this means that while the Ultra performs comfortably at ISO 1600- the standard 17 will need to go up to ISO 2000-2500 before noise becomes problematic. This is perfectly manageable down to depths of 20-25 meters in good natural light.
The macro capabilities are noteworthy. The minimum focus distance of 10 cm on the floating telephoto lens (2.6x optical zoom, 5x without loss) is a pleasant surprise for a standard model. It doesn't reach the 5 cm of the periscope lens on the 15 Ultra- or the 10 cm of the 17 Ultra on the dedicated module- but it still allows you to frame a nudibranch that is 3-4 cm in size in a usable way. For smaller underwater macro subjects- an external wet macro lens remains necessary.
The triple 50 MP system (wide angle 23 mm, telephoto 60 mm, ultrawide 17 mm) with OIS on the first two modules provides a welcome consistency in resolution for diving- eliminating the need to worry about which sensor might be of lower quality.Specs B1 - Technical Details
Main sensor: Light Fusion 950, 1/1.31 inch, f/1.67, 23 mm, OIS + EIS, 4-in-1 Super Pixel. Floating telephoto lens: 50 MP, f/2.0, 60 mm, OIS, 2.6x optical / 5x lossless zoom. Ultrawide lens: 50 MP (OV50M), f/2.2, 17 mm, EIS. Minimum focusing distance: approximately 10 cm on the telephoto lens. Native ISO range: 50 to 6400 (software extension up to 25,600). RAW burst shooting: estimated buffer of 15-20 images before latency (Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5). Shutter lag: 60-80 ms (very responsive). Leica anti-reflective coating - minimal flare observed in tests.
B1 Score: 4.2/5
B2 - RAW and Colorimetry: The True Leica Value Underwater
This is where the Leica partnership truly makes a difference for an underwater photographer.
Leica's color science comes in two native profiles: Leica Authentic (neutral rendering, faithful to real tones) and Leica Vibrant (accentuated micro-contrast, more punchy). For natural light diving, Leica Authentic is the logical choice. The RAW starting point is more neutral than what Samsung or Apple offer in their integrated processing, and white balance correction - already challenging underwater - can be done with fewer color shifts in post-processing.The native RAW format in DNG 14-bit is available directly within the Xiaomi app in Pro mode. With 14 bits compared to the still common 12 bits of competitors, this offers four times more levels of brightness per layer. In diving, where the contrast between illuminated areas and shadows is significant, this difference allows you to recover highlights or lowlights that would be lost with 12 bits.
For video, the H.265 10-bit codec with the Xiaomi Log format can be directly used for color grading. The white balance can be locked in Kelvin within the native Pro Video mode - essential underwater, where the automatic camera settings consistently tend towards green-blue.
MotionCam Pro (Android GMS) is compatible and unlocks RAW video frame by frame, as well as Focus Peaking, which is not natively available in the standard Xiaomi app.
B2 Specs - Technical Details Native RAW: Linear DNG 14-bit, available in the native app's Pro mode. Color science: Leica Authentic / Leica Vibrant, co-developed by Leica. Video codec: H.265 (HEVC) 10-bit, Xiaomi Log format available. Video white balance: Lockable in Kelvin (Pro Video mode). OS: Android 16 (HyperOS 3). MotionCam Pro: Compatible (Android GMS, full access). Focus Peaking: Via MotionCam Pro only (not native to the Xiaomi app). B2 Score: 4.5/5
B3 - Storage and Transfer: The Real Limitation of the Base ModelThe lack of a microSD card slot is the first thing to consider before buying the Xiaomi 17 for intensive use in diving.
The 256 GB version leaves approximately 235 GB of usable space after the operating system. A 14-bit RAW DNG file at 50 MP weighs between 25 and 40 MB. A day of three active dives shooting in RAW easily represents 15 to 25 GB. Without a microSD card, transferring files to an external SSD via USB-C becomes the only option on the boat - which means you need to have the USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 cable with you. The measured transfer rate (800 to 1200 MB/s in sequential mode) is excellent once the cable is connected.
The 512 GB version exists and solves the problem for most uses. If you are buying the Xiaomi 17 for serious underwater photography, choose the 512 GB model directly.
The USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port supports video output and high-speed data transfer - clearly designed for professional use. This is a real advantage compared to previous generations.
Specs B3 - technical details Internal storage: 256 GB or 512 GB (UFS 4.1). Actual available space (256 GB): approximately 235 GB. microSD card slot: not present. Connector: USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 (video output + high-speed data transfer). Measured transfer rate (external SSD): 800 to 1200 MB/s in sequential read/write. Score B3: 3.5/5 (penalty for the absence of a microSD card)
B4 - Thermal performance and condensation: aluminum in cold waterThe Xiaomi 17's aerospace-grade aluminum frame is robust and well-made. It's not the titanium found in the 17 Ultra or some premium competitors - which doesn't have a direct functional impact on diving, but could affect long-term rigidity under repeated stress.
What really matters for diving is thermal management. The Xiaomi 17's vapor chamber effectively cools the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 during extended video recording sessions. The risk of thermal throttling that could interrupt a recording mid-dive is limited - the processor has sufficient thermal headroom once it's underwater.
The IP68 certification (30 minutes at 1.5 meters) protects against accidental water ingress, but it doesn't replace a dedicated waterproof housing for actual deep dives. The standard procedure applies: rinse thoroughly with fresh water immediately after exposure to saltwater, and ensure complete drying before closing the protective covers.
In cold water (below 10-12°C), the temperature difference between the warm air inside the housing and the cold water creates a risk of condensation on the camera's lens. This risk is slightly higher with an aluminum frame (a better thermal conductor) than with a titanium frame. The silica gel capsule in the Divevolk housing is therefore particularly important to check.[!WARNING] Silica gel: mandatory. Aluminum housing + vapor chamber: provides maximum thermal conductivity to the enclosure. The silica gel capsule in the Divevolk must be replaced every 2-3 days in humid tropical environments. Mandatory check before each enclosure closure.
Tropical overheating: The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is one of the best thermally managed chips in this comparison. In water at 28°C, software overheating occurs after approximately 22 minutes of continuous 4K recording - better than Apple Pro models under the same conditions. The vapor chamber here provides a benefit, even though it can worsen condensation in cold water.
B4 Specs - technical details: Housing material: aerospace aluminum (frame) + Xiaomi Dragon Crystal glass (back and screen). Cooling: high-efficiency vapor chamber. Water certification: IP68 (30 minutes at 1.5 m) - accidental protection only. Risk of condensation in cold water: moderate (aluminum housing conducts heat).
B4 Score: 3.8/5
B5 - Silicon-carbon battery: a surprising highlight
The 6,330 mAh silicon-carbon (Si-C) battery is probably the most underestimated feature of the Xiaomi 17 for diving. The Si-C chemistry allows for a higher energy density compared to traditional batteries of the same size. The Xiaomi 17 format battery has 6,330 mAh, which is approximately 20% more capacity than a standard Li-Ion battery in the same volume. In practice: a day of three dives (with the screen continuously on inside the housing and apps running) typically consumes 50 to 70% of the battery. It's realistic to return to the boat with around 30% remaining.
The cold resistance is real, but needs some clarification. Si-C chemistry performs better in low temperatures than standard Li-Ion batteries, but a prolonged dive in cold water (below 10°C) still accelerates discharge. Expect approximately 10 to 15% loss of effective capacity below 10°C - which is still significantly better than the 20 to 30% loss seen with a standard Li-Ion battery.
The 100W wired charging allows you to go from 0% to 80% in less than 30 minutes - useful for quick recharges between dives on a busy day.
B5 Specs - Technical Details Capacity: 6,330 mAh (global version). Chemistry: silicon-carbon (Si-C). Wired Charging: 100W. Wireless Charging: 50W. Lifespan: 800 to 1,000 cycles before a 20% degradation (standard 2026). Performance in Cold Water: Better than standard Li-Ion, but accelerated discharge below 5°C. B5 Score: 4.5/5

B6 - Underwater Autofocus: Fast but Requires Monitoring in Murky Water
The autofocus system of the Xiaomi 17 combines three technologies: PDAF (Phase Detection) on the main sensor, AI Deep Learning Focus for subject recognition, and laser ToF (Time of Flight) for distance measurement.
Underwater, this trio works well under standard conditions. In clear tropical waters with well-defined subjects (fish, coral, turtles), autofocus is fast and subject tracking is accurate. The laser ToF helps with focusing in dark areas where PDAF alone might struggle.
The limitation - common to almost all smartphones - is murky water. When there are suspended particles (plankton, moving sediment, or turbid water with reduced visibility), the AI may sometimes interpret these particles as potential subjects and switch between the main subject and the foreground. This is not specific to the Xiaomi 17, but it's something to be aware of.
Focus Peaking - a valuable tool for checking sharpness while diving, especially in macro photography - is not available in the native Xiaomi application. It can be activated via MotionCam Pro, which means switching between apps depending on the desired shooting mode. The good news: there is no LiDAR (reserved for Pro/Ultra models), but the ToF laser and AI compensate well for common underwater photography uses.
B6 Specs - Technical Details Autofocus: PDAF phase detection + AI Deep Learning Focus + ToF laser. LiDAR: Not available (reserved for Pro/Ultra models in the Xiaomi range). Focus Peaking: Available via MotionCam Pro only (not native). AI Anti-backscatter: Integrated scene recognition, effective in clear water. Limitation in turbid water: Possible confusion of AI between particles and subjects in murky water. B6 Score: 4.0/5
B7 - Available Housings: Divevolk Confirms Compatibility
In February 2026, Divevolk published an article dedicated to the Xiaomi 17 and its SeaTouch housings - proof that the standard model is actively being followed by specialized manufacturers, not just the Ultra.
The reference housing is the Divevolk SeaTouch 4 Max Platinum (or its 4 Max Plus version). This universal housing with a patented touch membrane allows you to use the Xiaomi 17's touchscreen directly underwater up to 60 meters. In practice, you can change sensors, adjust Pro settings, shoot in RAW, and navigate MotionCam Pro without any external mechanical buttons. Exactly the same workflow as on land.
The standard SeaTouch mounting points accept handles, arms, and external wet lenses (wide-angle, macro) to build a complete rig according to your needs. No dedicated Xiaomi 17 housings are available on the general market - the market for custom smartphone housings remains very limited. The SeaTouch 4 Max remains the most complete option currently available.
B7 Specs - Technical Details Recommended housing: DIVEVOLK SeaTouch 4 Max Platinum. Certified depth: 60 meters. Touchscreen access: yes, patented membrane, functional up to 40m (documented). App compatibility: native Xiaomi app + MotionCam Pro + all Android apps. Approximate price: around €440. Source: divevolkdiving.com. Dedicated Xiaomi 17 housing: unavailable (universal only). B7 Score: 4.0/5

Bring a portable USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 SSD as a backup (the transfer speed of the Xiaomi 17 fully justifies this).
Configure MotionCam Pro before your dive to access Focus Peaking and RAW video capabilities.
Enable Xiaomi Log in Pro Video mode, set White Balance in Kelvin (recommended setting: 4500-5500 K depending on depth).
Check the silica capsule of the underwater housing in cold water.
Verdict: Is the standard Xiaomi 17 worth it for underwater use?
Yes. The Xiaomi 17 is not the 17 Ultra. It doesn't claim to be. What it offers is Leica color science, 14-bit DNG RAW, and MotionCam Pro compatibility in a package priced at €999 - with a 1/1.31-inch sensor that performs well at depths up to 20-25 meters in natural light.
There are two limitations to be aware of before purchasing: the lack of a microSD card slot requires careful consideration of storage capacity from the start (choose the 512 GB version if you shoot a lot), and the 1/1.31-inch sensor shows its limits beyond 25 meters compared to a full 1-inch format sensor. Apart from these two points, the Xiaomi 17 is a consistent tool, well supported by Divevolk, and offers real image quality for underwater photography at a reasonable price. If you have €1500 to invest and want the best possible tool, check out our review of the Xiaomi 17 Ultra. If your budget is €999 and you want Leica's color science and serious RAW capabilities without compromising on essential features, the standard Xiaomi 17 deserves its score of 4.1/5.
