Anker 622 MagGo: Magnetic power for the underwater photographer

As the sun begins to set on the horizon and the dive boat starts its return to port, a smartphone becomes an essential tool for checking weather maps or sharing the day's images. In this context, where humidity and the movement of the boat make it difficult to use fragile cables, choosing a simple power solution makes perfect sense. The Anker 622 MagGo, with its magnetic system, precisely addresses these on-site constraints [1].

On a boat deck, every movement must be efficient. Searching for a USB cable at the bottom of a waterproof bag or trying to plug it in with numb fingers can quickly become tedious. MagSafe technology changes everything. By bringing the iPhone close to the magnetic surface, the connection is established instantly with a reassuring click. The strength of the magnet is sufficient to hold the device in place despite the vibrations of the engine or the rolling of the boat, preventing accidental disconnections. The absence of a cable reduces the risks associated with water splashes. While the battery is not waterproof, the lack of a trailing cable on a wet surface limits the potential entry points for moisture. This is a significant safety feature for the photographer who wants to keep their equipment operational without turning their workspace into a tangle of connectors.

It's important to look at the figures realistically. With a capacity of 5000 mAh, or approximately 18.5 Wh, the Anker 622 MagGo is not designed to power a multi-day expedition [2]. Its role is that of a backup power source for the end of the day. For a recent iPhone, it provides approximately one full charge, which is sufficient to compensate for the power consumption of the GPS or screen during file transfers.

Wireless charging is limited to 7.5 W. This is not the fastest charging speed, but it prioritizes thermal stability. At sea, under the sun, an overly aggressive charge could lead to overheating. Here, the power flow remains constant and controlled, protecting the health of your battery. For faster charging, the side USB-C port allows for wired charging up to 12 W.

One of the clever features of this model is its integrated, foldable stand. When unfolded, it transforms the battery into a stable base. This is a valuable detail during a ferry ride or during surface intervals. You can place your phone to watch dive videos without having to hold the device. The side USB-C port remains accessible, allowing you to charge the battery itself while keeping the display active.

The issue of transporting lithium batteries is a major concern for traveling divers. With an energy capacity of 18.5 Wh, the Anker 622 MagGo is well below the 100 Wh limit set by IATA [3]. This characteristic theoretically simplifies its transport, as it does not require prior authorization for most international journeys.Safety remains the absolute rule. This battery is strictly prohibited in checked baggage. It must always be carried with you in your carry-on luggage [4]. The risks of fire associated with lithium are taken very seriously by the authorities. It is essential to verify the applicable regulations with the airline and authorities at the time of departure. Never assume that a battery is accepted on a flight as a guarantee, because the specific regulations of each carrier or transit airports may change without notice. A systematic check before each flight remains the only way to travel with peace of mind.

The Anker 622 MagGo is designed for underwater photographers who use their iPhone as a secondary tool. If your diving involves taking notes between dives or controlling your underwater housing via an app, this model is an excellent choice. Its lightweight design makes it an accessory that you will readily put in your bag, unlike heavier 20,000 mAh models that often end up staying at the hotel. It's suitable for divers who take day trips or short cruises where access to a power outlet is possible in the evening. Its design and versatility make it a good companion for everyday use, beyond water activities. It will never replace a large power bank for those who need to recharge camera flashes or laptops, but it perfectly fulfills its mission as a lightweight and readily available backup power source.

This battery is based on the MagSafe ecosystem. It is intended for use with iPhones from the 12 series onwards. Android device users will not be able to take advantage of the magnetic attachment or the alignment necessary for efficient charging. Attempting to use this battery with an incompatible case may result in significant energy loss in the form of heat, which is detrimental to the lifespan of the cells.

Another limitation is its 5000 mAh capacity. For iPhone models with very large batteries, it will not be able to provide a full recharge. Instead, it will provide a few hours of extra battery life to help you finish the day. Finally, the battery itself takes approximately 180 minutes to recharge, which requires planning ahead. You shouldn't expect to be able to fully charge it just before boarding the boat, but rather charge it the night before. In conclusion, the Anker 622 MagGo isn't designed to be the most powerful battery, but rather the most practical. It prioritizes ergonomics in environments where every movement is a constraint. For divers who want their phone to last through a day at sea without the hassle of cables, it offers an elegant solution. It's an accessory that allows you to focus on what's important: the enjoyment of being on the water and preparing for the next dive.
