How to choose a dive mask for underwater photography: field of vision, low internal volume, solid-colour skirt, anti-fog. Complete guide from a diving instructor.

The mask is the only piece of equipment you wear continuously during an underwater photo dive. Yet it is usually the last thing people think about when building their setup. A poor mask does not ruin photos in a dramatic, obvious way. It ruins them quietly, over time, by narrowing your field of vision, creating stray reflections, and forcing you to surface too early because of persistent fogging.
A dive mask for underwater photography needs to check four boxes: wide field of vision to spot subjects in time, low internal volume for fast clearing, a solid-colour skirt to eliminate lateral light interference, and a reliable long-term anti-fog treatment.
In 2019 in Cyprus, I spent three consecutive dives wondering why some of my photos had a soft haze or glow around the edges. I blamed it on focus, water conditions, light. It was none of those things. It was my mask. A dual-lens model with a wide frame and a clear silicone skirt. Lateral light was creating interference I could not perceive with the naked eye, but that the camera recorded faithfully. I switched masks. The problem disappeared.
In underwater photography, you are tracking an active subject, often moving fast. An octopus changing color, a ray crossing against the current, a school of barracuda pivoting. If your mask cuts peripheral vision, you will consistently arrive late to the action.
Field of vision depends on two factors: the surface area of exposed lens and the distance between the lens and your eye. The larger the lens and the closer it sits to your face, the wider the field. Low-volume masks are doubly advantageous here: they bring the lens closer to your eyes and reduce distortion at the edges.
Single-lens masks (one curved piece of glass in front of both eyes) generally offer a wider horizontal field than dual-lens designs. The leading models on this segment: Cressi Nano, Atomic Aquatics Frameless, Tusa Paragon. The central bridge of a dual-lens mask inevitably cuts the central field, even when the total lens area is wide.
For destinations with active marine life in shallow water (reefs, snorkeling photography, Mediterranean), this wider field makes a concrete difference in how many opportunities you catch before the subject disappears.
Internal volume is the air space between your face and the lens. It determines how much effort you spend equalizing pressure on descent, how much air you exhaust to clear the mask when water enters, and how close the lens sits to your eyes.
A low-volume mask requires less air to clear. In practice: if water enters your mask while shooting (it happens, especially in current), clearing a low-volume mask takes two seconds. With a standard-volume mask, you lose five seconds of concentration and often the shot.
The common confusion: low volume does not mean the mask feels tight. Fit depends on the silicone skirt shape and your facial geometry, not on internal volume. Always try several models in a shop before buying. The test: press the mask against your face without the strap, inhale gently through your nose. If the mask holds itself, the skirt fits your face.
If you have more than -1.5 diopters of correction, the choice simplifies: get a dual-lens mask. Specialist opticians or some dive centers replace the flat stock lenses with prescription optical lenses. Correction is generally available up to -8 diopters, in half-diopter increments.
If your prescription is asymmetric (different correction for each eye), some manufacturers such as Scubapro or Cressi sell lenses in separate pairs. This matters if you have more than 0.5 diopters difference between eyes.
If you have no prescription or less than -1.5 diopters, the single-lens mask is the natural choice for photography: maximum field of vision, low volume, and no central bridge interrupting your view.
The skirt (the silicone part that seals against your face) comes in clear, smoked, black, or bright colour.
The decisive criterion for underwater photography: avoid the clear skirt. In shallow, sunlit water (0 to 8 meters), it lets light in from the sides. This creates visual glare, and on some cameras with optical or electronic viewfinders, an actual reflection inside the viewfinder itself. In green or turbid water, it amplifies the sense of lateral haze, making it harder to spot subjects.
A solid-colour skirt cuts all of that. You see what is in front of you, without lateral light scatter.
Black or bright colour? Both work, with different effects on wildlife. A black skirt makes you more neutral and discreet underwater. A brightly coloured skirt can attract the curiosity of marine animals, which sometimes opens up photographic opportunities you would not otherwise have. Some wildlife photographers work with this effect deliberately. I use a white skirt, which works just as well in photo diving as black, and occasionally draws subjects closer. The smoked skirt is the only genuinely poor compromise. It is neither as effective as a solid-colour skirt in strong light, nor visually neutral enough in other conditions.
The factory anti-fog treatment disappears after three to five dives. Several methods exist, with very different results.
The lasting method, before first use: rub the inside of the lens with non-abrasive white gel toothpaste (no micro-beads, no peroxide). Leave it for five minutes, rinse thoroughly with cold water. Repeat twice. This creates a slight microscopic roughness that prevents water droplets from forming a continuous opaque layer.
Before each dive from then on: spit inside the mask, spread the saliva across the entire lens surface, rinse very lightly (not completely, keep a thin film), then put the mask on. This is the most effective and cheapest method there is.
Anti-fog sprays work, but their duration varies across brands and water conditions. In pool training, several participants use diluted liquid Marseille soap. It works, but is irritating if water enters the mask.

I have dived for years with the Cressi Nano as my primary mask: single lens, white skirt, low volume, excellent field of vision. For wide-angle situations in very clear water, I use the Tusa Paragon for its even wider field.
For photographers with prescriptions, the Scubapro Spectra Bi is a solid dual-lens mask accepting corrective lenses up to -8 diopters. The Mares Sealor is an accessible alternative in the same configuration.
One important note before any purchase: try the mask before diving with a camera. The priority is that the mask fits your face without leaking. All the advantages of a solid-colour skirt or low volume are useless if the mask lets in water every ten minutes.
