In underwater macro, two paths open up: external wet lenses for compacts and smartphones, and native macro lenses for housed mirrorless systems. The former cost €80-200 and work with your current gear. The latter start at €300-400 and require a significantly heavier total investment. Your current system dictates your choice, not your ambition.
My first truly sharp macro image underwater was in Cyprus in 2016. Both approaches work. The difference lies in entry cost, maximum achievable quality, and compatibility with your existing gear.
A wet lens is an externally attached lens designed to fit on the front of your compact or smartphone housing. It screws on (M67) or clips on depending on models. You can add or remove it underwater, allowing you to alternate between macro and wide angle on the same dive.

With a housed mirrorless, macro requires a flat port (macro port), not a dome port. A dome port creates a curved interface generating distortion and chromatic aberration with macro and telephoto lenses. A flat port preserves lens characteristics without deformation.
Dome ports remain the right choice for wide-angle lenses and broad scenes.
Gear matters. But after ten years of underwater macro, here is what I learned:
Patience. The best macro subjects reveal themselves to those who wait. A mantis shrimp stepping out of its burrow, a nudibranch in ideal position. It cannot be forced and cannot be bought.
Approach. Descend slowly, never exhale toward the subject, never place hands on the seabed. A clean approach on a modest subject produces better images than a brusque approach on a rare species.
Buoyancy control. In macro, depth of field is measured in millimeters. The slightest instability creates unrecoverable blur. IBIS on an OM-5 or Sony A7C II genuinely changes the game on static subjects.
