Freshwater underwater photography in Belgium: pike, tench, carp, signal crayfish, perch and invertebrates by season. A nature photographer's guide to Belgian quarries.
Most Belgian photographers look at their local quarries as second-rate training grounds. You dive there to work on buoyancy control, polish technique before the real trip. The idea of staying in Belgium for wildlife photography does not cross many minds.
That is a mistake, and an interesting one. Because behind the green water and the cold of our quarries hides authentic wildlife that the Mediterranean simply cannot offer: a 80cm pike suspended in the weeds, a monumental carp resting on the bottom, signal crayfish exploring rocks, dragonfly larvae hunting at 3 metres depth.
I started paying close attention to local wildlife during a training session at Floreffe. I was looking for an angle to work continuous autofocus tracking with a group, and ended up spending 40 minutes on a tench feeding among submerged willow roots. The photo I made that day is on my wall. Not a Maldives or Mediterranean shot. A Belgian tench, filtered natural light, green vegetation background. You just had to learn to look.
Here is how to read Belgian waters, season by season.
Winter is the best season for photographing predators. Water cools (4 to 8°C depending on depth), algae growth recedes, and visibility in quarries can improve to 8-10 metres. Pike (Esox lucius) are more active in cold water, and less wary - they hunt, move, and do not immediately flee a slow-moving diver.
Where to find pike: edges between open water and vegetated zones, submerged banks with stumps or branches, shallow areas (2 to 5 metres) with structure.
Photography technique for pike: slow lateral approach, never frontal. A pike looked at head-on dives immediately. Approaching from the side at a 45-degree angle, stopping fins well before reaching position, and waiting for the fish to resume natural behaviour, you can get within 50 to 80 cm. Enough for a compact in standard mode or a smartphone in a wide housing.

Ideal framing: eye sharp, body in slight diagonal. Pike are naturally graphic subjects - the elongated jaw, the mottled pattern, the way they suspend in the water. Expose for the eye.
Rochefontaine and Spontin quarries (Province of Namur) are recognised pike spots. Lake Bütgenbach in the High Fens also offers encounters, but diving regulations vary - check with the local club.
Brown trout are also present in some Belgian waters (diving-accessible rivers, certain quarries). Faster and less predictable than pike, but the orange and red markings are photographically exceptional.
Warming spring (March-May) is spawning season for several species. Carp (Cyprinus carpio) move into shallow areas. Carp of 60cm to 1 metre in open water at 1 or 2 metres depth, under natural morning light - this is an image I have been chasing for years with varied but always exciting results.
Tench (Tinca tinca) are excellent macro subjects: their golden-green skin is very photogenic in natural light. They move slowly near the bottom, foraging in sediment. The key is positioning at their level in passive drift, without fin movement that disturbs the silt.
Common frogs (Rana temporaria) and water frogs (Pelophylax spp.) are active at the surface and intermediate zone (0-3m) from April to June. A frog swimming up towards the surface, photographed from below against the light - this is a classic freshwater nature photography shot, accessible to any Belgian diver.
This tracking and patience work is exactly what I teach in AquaExposure training before major trips. A photographer who has followed a carp for 20 minutes in a Namur quarry will know how to follow a dolphin in Mozambique.
Summer (June-August) is the season of warmth and proliferation. Visibility can drop (suspended algae), but life is everywhere.
Signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) - an invasive North American species - are ubiquitous in Belgian waters. Their introduction is ecologically problematic, but for the photographer they are accessible, expressive macro subjects: coloured claws, exploratory behaviour, comfortable size (8 to 15 cm).
Found under stones and in crevices, usually at less than 5 metres depth. Photography technique: lie flat on stabilised bottom (no silt), wait for the crayfish to reposition after your arrival, work in macro at 15-25 cm. Focus on the stalked eyes for the best results.
Pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) are often present in Eau d'Heure reservoir and Zeebrugge lakes. Faster and more wary than pike but the golden body and striped fins are photographically interesting.
Summer invertebrate life also offers freshwater larvae: dragonfly nymphs (Odonata), caddisfly larvae in their debris cases, freshwater snails. Micro subjects that the Mediterranean simply does not offer.
Autumn (September-November) is perch (Perca fluviatilis) season - a sociable species that hunts in schools. A cloud of perch foraging along the bottom, striped black and green, with red-orange pelvic fins - visually very strong.
Perch are less wary than pike or carp. They allow close approach if the photographer moves slowly. Finding an active school requires exploration: look at transition zones between sandy and rocky bottom, edges of submerged obstacles, and shallow sheltered areas.
Autumn light, with the changing sun angle, creates distinctive light effects in the water: angled shafts, suspended particles catching the light. For photographers trained to seek natural light, autumn in a Belgian quarry can be visually very rich.
The Dutch Zeeland area in autumn also offers perch and brackish water subjects that extend the Belgian season.
Belgium holds freshwater invertebrate communities that most divers ignore. Freshwater sponges (Spongilla lacustris, bright green, on submerged rocks), freshwater bryozoans (Cristatella mucedo), swan mussels (Anodonta cygnea) and painter's mussels (Unio pictorum).
These organisms require precise macro work - often within 10 cm of the subject. They do not move, which allows extended composition work. Manual focus or spot autofocus in macro mode is preferable to standard autofocus, which can struggle on fine textures.
Freshwater sponge (Spongilla) forms bright green colonies on submerged stones in well-oxygenated water. Present in most Belgian lakes. Its texture and colour make it an excellent macro subject with no flash required.

Belgian wildlife trains you in searching, waiting and reading a freshwater environment. These skills are not learned in the Maldives, where subjects come to you. In Belgium, it is the opposite: you go to them, patiently, understanding their behaviour.
A photographer who has dived regularly in Belgian sites before their first sea trip starts with a real advantage: they know how to observe, how to wait, how to find the subject that is not obvious. These naturalist reflexes are what separates a correct photo from one that tells a story.

Belgian quarries, with their cold green water and their wildlife that must be earned, are probably one of the best underwater photography schools I know. Not because they are beautiful. Because they demand.
Yes, but different from the Mediterranean. Belgian fresh waters hold impressive pike, photogenic tench, monumental carp, signal crayfish, perch schools and a surprising invertebrate community (freshwater sponges, bryozoans, pond mussels). The challenge is searching and approaching - which makes it an excellent school of naturalist underwater photography.
Winter (November to February). Water is colder (4-8°C), clearer as algae have died back, and pike are more active and less wary. Rochefontaine and Spontin quarries offer good encounters. Early morning or late afternoon dives improve chances.
Very slowly. Belgian freshwater species are generally more wary than tropical fish accustomed to divers. Key principles: descend vertically from the surface to avoid surface splash, move in passive drift, never point the housing directly at the fish when approaching (use a lateral 45-degree angle), wait until the subject resumes natural behaviour before shooting.
In summer, yes. They are active, not particularly shy, and make excellent macro subjects with their claws and colour. Found under stones and in crevices. The technical challenge is the cluttered background: careful focus and depth of field are needed to isolate the subject.
Yes, and it is often more productive for certain species (eels, freshwater shrimps, frogs and toads in season). Night diving requires a dive torch and a buddy. In established and marked sites like Nemo 33 or Eau d'Heure, it is possible through local clubs.
A waterproof compact or a smartphone in a housing is enough to start. Macro mode is essential for invertebrates. If you have an interchangeable system, a 60mm or 90mm macro lens in a housing is ideal. Custom white balance helps correct the green dominant colour of Belgian fresh water.
